Podcast news: BBC’s John Murray says ‘imagination’ is key for young broadcasters

BBC 5 Live commentator John Murray was a guest on the first Sports News Blitz podcast - and has urged any aspiring broadcasters looking to break into the industry to ‘use imagination’.

Murray, who was born in 1966 when England won the football World Cup, is currently in Germany following Gareth Southgate’s team’s pursuit for European Championship glory.

And he took time out from his busy schedule to join host Matt Dudley and Sam Herd, who have launched the Sports News Blitz podcast in conjunction with Sip Media Solutions, for a chat about his career and England’s hopes ahead of the last-eight clash with Switzerland.

Murray has had a distinguished career with the BBC and passed on some advice to young content creators hoping to forge a career in digital media.

He told the Sports News Blitz podcast: “From a commentary point of view, I think the most important thing is to use your own imagination.

“What sets people apart is what comes out of your head and imagination, individual thoughts that no one else is going to come up with.

“That's what I try to do - and occasionally I will come up with something vaguely in the ballpark of what I want to do.”

Sports News Blitz’s podcast will stand out from the crowd as we will talk to commentators from across the sporting arena, with Murray the first of many to come.
